Kaptanowsky Job Hunt

There are copious amounts of strategies or tips provided in chapter two, many of which I found quite interesting and even useful. I was unaware that companies have programs set up that search through resumes sent in based on key words. Potential employees send in resumes and many of which are not looked at by any person if the resumes do not have certain key words written. Many times some of the keywords are simply words in the companies’ description of the job or certain degrees earned. Another strategy provided is to limit each sentence describing yourself, and instead be concise and to the point. Often times it is only three or four words less in each sentence, however those few words can make a world of difference to the people viewing the resumes. The people looking over the resume's will often times just quickly scan over the applicants, and the set up of the resume can be the difference if the applicant is given a second look or not. Even the balance of the words on the paper is a factor in the hiring process.

It is interesting how the delivery of the words itself in the resume can be such a large factor in gaining the interest of the potential employer. Two people can have the same skill set as one another and with different wording of the same skills one of them can be presented as more highly qualified for the job. For example, if one simply explains learned prowess in computer programs in general, it is not regarded as highly as naming the particular programs they are proficient in. One strategy that can be very useful is the choice of resume type to build. There are two different types; either experiential or skills. Experiential is geared more towards people just out of school and provides more information about schooling history, and prior accomplishments. While skills are for people with more work experience and have unique skill sets due to the prior work that the new company is looking for.

There are many jobs to apply for in regards to project 1, but I have narrowed it down to my two. The first job is an Engineering student co-op at DTE Energy. The second job to apply is an Electrical Engineering internship in a company called Bosch. The DTE internship will allow me to work with engineers in various ways. Some of which include testing equipment, and if there is a problem see what is wrong and how to fix it. Another is taking experimental data and recording it, and then evaluating that data and presenting the findings. In general, the job is to perform tasks that provide assistance to the engineers.

The internship at Bosch provides many responsibilities as well. It will include hands on work in Electrical Engineering after the observation of engineers and guided assistance by them. The job also includes the development of my technical skill set through training. I will further my knowledge of these jobs and companies by searching each job description more in depth, and will research the company to find any interesting information worthwhile to know. Including perhaps any recent major accomplishments the company has had. I will also ask people I know that have job history at these companies if there are any other details pertaining to the companies or job in which they could provide.

The resume I will create for my job applications will be one page. A one page resume will best suit the job pursuit. This is the ideal length because I do not have much experience in this field thus far. Therefore if the resume were to be longer it seems as though there would be many empty words just filling space. Also, what strengths I do have I would prefer for those to stand out to the reader in hopes to gain some attention. The resume will gear more towards experiential emphasis. Experiential is the more ideal resume emphasis because I do not have prior job experience directly related to these jobs. Also, the courses I have taken or are currently taking do in fact relate more towards the jobs. The experiential will provide an overview of prior jobs and accomplishments that will help the reader gauge whether or not my past experiences will help in the potential job.

I may not have any employment history related to these jobs; however I have had some experiences that could help my resume. One of which includes a group assignment in an engineering course where my group and I had to design a system to provide better drainage for a field and include the type and amount of each material. Along with the assignment I have also taken numerous classes that apply to these jobs. These classes include Calculus 3, Calculus based physics for engineers, and Cad among others.
