SWA 1

Anderson’s writings in chapter 2 of Technical Communication suggest many tips and advice in writing reader-centered resumes and letters.  The most notable suggestion is that of writing a proper objective.  This is an area in which I have made the mistake that is highlighted in the Anderson’s book. Anderson describes a proper objective be centered to the reader, what the applicant can offer the employer.  In my line of work, I see many resumes. This is a common error among prospective employees.   As a hiring agent, I want to see what it is that the applicant can offer me, not what I can do for them.  The strategy of creating a reader-centered objective is Anderson’s most important tip.  The correct objective does not guarantee a job interview, but an incorrect objective will probably rule one out.

Anderson also gives tips on proper word choices.  He suggests using action verbs instead of nouns to allow the reader to view your tasks in action.  The phrase “responsibilities included” is to be avoided.  The listing of job skills and responsibilities on a job resume are expected and this phrase is just redundant.  Anderson also gives tips to use correct verb tense and usage.  If jobs/tasks are currently being performed then it is necessary to present tense. These techniques are proper in any case, but a simple mistake on a resume may hurt the job seeker.  During the reading, Anderson describes the length of a proper resume.  With many newly graduated students, one page will be the proper length.  This should allow the reader to gather enough information without being overwhelming.

In researching job opportunities to apply to, I visited the website indeed.com.  Two posting caught my interest.  The first is from the engineering firm of O’Brien and Gere which is in need of an Environmental Engineer.

Environmental Engineer

O'Brien & Gere is currently seeking an entry-level Environmental Engineer for our Farmington Hills, MI office. This individual will play a key role in supporting complex remediation projects.

The second job posting is for an internship with Gerdau in Monroe, MI.

Overview:

Gerdau's Internship Program provides an exciting and educational opportunity in which students can experience the steel industry through meaningful and challenging work assignments and projects. Interns will receive on-the-job experience, organization orientation, and documented work assignments and projects that provide clear and targeted goals.

In order to properly construct a resume and cover letter for application, I will thoroughly review the full job description, making a list of the qualifications desired.  Once the list of key words and qualifications are compiled a resume can be made to reflect those qualifications.  I will also include the courses that pertain most to the jobs in the body of my resume.  To understand the audience further, exploration of each companies websites will be necessary. The resume I will construct to apply for these positions will be in the experiential format and one page in length.  With no speakable engineering experience, a skills resume would be detrimental to my cause.  I chose the length to be one page because the direct skills that the employer is looking for would not be mirrored in my job history; therefore, highlighting what I did at my previous positions should be concise. I have little experience with engineering outside the classroom.  I will rely on the classes that I have taken to communicate an ability to excel at the job in question.  Highlighting engineering courses, as well as math and science classes, will give the best opportunity to communicate my abilities.
