1.  The goals of my usability test will be to see how I can improve specifically the clarity of my instructions and the persuasiveness of my introduction.  I would also like it to review the usefulness of my warning section.

2. My target audience for testing would be coffee drinkers in general from connoisseurs to novices.  Ideally and realistically I would like to tests 2 - 3 people.  I would like to test one seasoned coffee maker and one beginner.  I already have an experienced coffee maker in mind that I could test, so I would only need one coffee lover from our class to read my instruction set.

3.  Performance Test - I believe that a performance test would be the best way to receive feedback and constructive criticism for my instruction set.  However, a drawback to this method of testing is that I would need to be in a kitchen to perform it and therefore could not conduct it in class.  I plan on using this test when testing someone outside of class.

Location Test - I think a location test could be useful because it would allow me to ask readers to specifically find and interpret areas of my instruction set that I believe could be confusing.  A draw back to this is that it would be difficult to test the entire document by asking the reader to find specific information in each part.  This would be good to use if I felt like a particular part of my instruction set is weak and needs improvement, but I could easily overlook a part of my instruction set that needs work because I believe it was adequate.  A benefit also is that it can be done anywhere.

Understandability Test -  This type of test would be useful because it can be done anywhere the instruction set can be read and it addresses the usability of the entire instruction set.  A weakness of this test is that you would have to make sure that the questions you ask cover the understandability of the entire instruction set.  This type of test is also useful because it can be combined with a location test.

The tests I will most likely use are the performance test and understandability test, possibly combined with a location test.

4. Planning a usability test:

    1. Scope - I am testing an instruction set for how to make cold brew coffee.  The test will cover the usability and persuasiveness of the directions, warnings, tips, list of materials, and introduction of the instruction set.
    2. Purpose - (see #1 above) It purpose it to see how easily someone can make cold brew coffee and will test the effectiveness of the instruction set to facilitate the process
    3. Schedule and Location - One test will be conducted on Thursday, February 19th in class and another will be conducted outside of class Friday, February 20th in my home kitchen.
    4. Sessions - The sessions will be 30 minutes to 1 hour long.
    5. Equipment - The equipment needed for the first test will be a laptop in order to read the instructions.  The second test will require coffee, a french press, a bowl, a pitcher, cheese cloth, a metal mesh strainer, and a spoon.
    6. Participants - I will test two people.  One coffee novice and one experienced coffee maker.  I will recruit these people by asking someone in class to do a usability test along with my mother.
    7. Scenarios - I will have 8 - 10 questions for the first usability test and I will have 10 tasks, which  will be each step of the instruction set and a question of overall feedback at the end, for the second.
    8. Metrics - Before the session is completed I will ask the reader how often they make coffee.  I will then have them read each part of the instruction set separately and ask several specific questions about each section.
      1. Introduction - Can you identify the scope of the activity? Do you feel persuaded to attempt making this type of coffee.
      2. Directions - How many methods are there in this instruction set? Which method do you need a french press for?  When and why do you use the cheese cloth?  In Method 1, do you pour the excess coffee grinds through the filter along with the liquid?
      3. Warning - Is the warning helpful to note?
      4. Tips - Do you think the tips would help you avoid potential problems?
    9. Quantitative Metrics - For the performance test I will time how long it takes to complete each method.  For the test conducted in class I will score the reader on how many questions they answer incorrectly when asked about understanding the instruction set.
    10. Roles - I will be the facilitator of the session and the notetaker.  A classmate/my mother will be the reader and the person being tested on understanding the instruction set.
